In 1979 the Masque, located on Hollywood Blvd and Cherokee was shut down - ending a chapter in LA’s punk scene. The venue still exists and has been converted into a storage basement for World of Wonder, a production company I’ve been working for. They preserved a lot of the graffiti but it’s been covered up by rows and rows of tapes, props and costumes. It was pretty cool being able to see this culturally significant venue and unfortunately don’t have any photos capture the size of the venue (it was huge… Probably around the size of the echoplex). I also couldn’t recognize anything from bands of the time that I knew. I hope that X was for the band, but x’s are pretty common. The go-go’s one was done only a few years ago when the band received their Walk of Fame star.
Edit: I’m going to have to go back down there soon. There are some pictures of Black Flag and the Germs graffiti. It’s probably covered up, but dammit, I need to SEEEEE it.
